The San Francisco Giants signed free-agent center fielder Harrison Bader to a two-year, $20.5 million deal. Bader is brought in to upgrade the Giants’ defense. As a team, Giants outfielders posted minus-18 outs above average in 2025, tied with the Baltimore Orioles for the worst mark in the major leagues.
Defense
Bader’s defense is his most significant asset, and he is precisely what the Giants need in the outfield. He’s a former Gold Glove winner with a strong track record of elite defense in center field. Bader ranks near the top of baseball in Outs Above Average, Defensive Runs Saved, and other advanced defensive stats, showing consistent ability to turn hits into outs. He has speed in the outfield and gets a quick read on balls. With his plus speed, he can cover a lot of ground at Oracle Park.
Hitter and Energy
At the plate, Bader has been inconsistent in his nine years, but he is coming off his best season at the plate in 2025. Bader compiled a .277 batting average, .347 OBP, .449 slugging, and 17 homers. He also posted a 122 wRC+, well above the league average offensively last season with the Minnesota Twins and Philadelphia Phillies. Bader is also good in the clubhouse, bringing competitive energy. His hustle plays and visible enthusiasm often energize teammates and fans alike, adding an intangible edge to his on-field impact.
Overall
Bader’s addition will likely move Jung Hoo Lee to right field. Overall, his signing is a good move for the Giants’ roster construction. Bader plugs a defensive hole with one of the game’s most respected outfielders, bringing speed and athleticism into the lineup. He needs to stay healthy. Bader has dealt with various injuries over the past few seasons, including groin and rib issues, which have occasionally limited his availability. Along with his defense, if Bader can bring close to the same offensive punch he did last year, he would be hige asset for the Giants.
