Spring Training games have gotten underway, and yet there are still quality players available on the free agent market. So we’ll examine the best of the available candidates at each position.
CATCHER: CHRISTIAN VAZQUEZ/ELIAS DIAZ

When it comes to the best available catcher left on the market, it’s nearly a dead-even push, so we’ll name them both. Both Christian Vazquez and Elias Diaz are nearly identical as players. By WAR, Vazquez has the edge; by OPS+, Diaz has the advantage. But regardless of how you slice it, the needle is only slightly moved by either player. And bringing in a catcher this late in camp puts any team that picks up their services behind the eight ball. So, for either player, they’re going to have to wait and see if an injury in Spring can open up a lane to signing with a team.
FIRST BASE: RHYS HOSKINS

Rhys Hoskins isn’t the same player that he once was with the Philadelphia Phillies. However, the fact that he remains unsigned is still quite curious. Recently, reports have come out that Bryce Harper is interested in a Phillies reunion with Hoskins. And the move could make sense, in the sole aspect that the Phillies will need some right-handed hitting to counterbalance their left-laden lineup. Whether or not a Philly reunion could happen remains to be seen. Yet, there are other potential landing destinations for the first baseman.
SECOND BASE: JOSE IGLESIAS

Mr. OMG remains without a home this Spring. While Iglesias isn’t going to light up the world with his bat, his defensive ability still resonates, and his infectious personality can help uplift a clubhouse during the long stretch through the “dog days” of Summer.
THIRD BASE: RAMON URIAS

Ramon Urias could find himself as a reliable utility player on a playoff-caliber team. Urias is versatile, and it’s in that versatility that Ramon could still help teams. At this point in Spring, Urias is likely waiting for an injury to open up a spot for him with more than a Minor League signing with an invite to Big League camp. Yet, Ramon will be an interesting name to watch as the Spring unfolds.
SHORTSTOP: LUIS URIAS

Essentially, everything that was just mentioned about his brother, Ramon, would also apply to Luis. Both Urias brothers are capable of playing multiple infield positions. And that versatility could help them land a job during Spring Training.
OUTFIELD: RANDAL GRICHUK, STARLING MARTE, JESSE WINKER

While their talents and skillsets differ at this point in their careers, all three outfielders could provide teams with some help. The quality of teams on the win curve would also differ for the players, because they could help rebuilding teams with some veterans who could help mold the next generation of players. Yet, any of the three could find themselves being a quality role player for a championship-caliber club as well.
DESIGNATED HITTER: ANDREW MCCUTCHEN

This one hurts a bit to write up, because the idea that Andrew McCutchen likely won’t end his career with the Pittsburgh Pirates stings. That said, there are still a lot of reasons to love the potential of “Cutch” on a team in 2026. Beyond just the incredible leader and clubhouse presence that Andrew can be for a team. McCutchen also provides a significant mentor for younger players. Adding Cutch onto a team with younger players could see McCutchen serve as almost another coach on the staff. As a former MVP winner, Andrew has been through it all in the game and could easily help teams in all facets of the win curve. Hopefully, there is still a place in baseball in 2026 for Andrew McCutchen.
STARTER: ZACK LITTELL

It is extremely curious that, with the old adage of “you can never have enough pitching,” a quality starter like Zack Littell is still available on the free agent market. Littell put together a solid overall season a year ago. And while his time with the Cincinnati Reds, after the trade, wasn’t exactly his best showing, there is still quality in the arm. There will undoubtedly be injuries in Spring Training, because that’s what always happens, and then maybe we see the market for Littell heat up.
RELIEVER: DANNY COULOMBE

For as curious a lack of being signed as Zack Littell was, it is even more curious that a left-handed reliever like Danny Coulombe is still available. Yes, also like Littell, Coulombe did not have a good showing after being traded last season. A lefty reliever is always a necessity for a championship-caliber team to try to combat the big lefty bats from potential postseason opponents. So not seeing Coulombe signed already feels confusing to say the least. However, just like with Littell, injuries always happen in Spring, and that could open the door for Danny Coulombe to be signed.
