It may seem like a BOLD claim to state that even before the official first pitch of the 2026 season, there are teams on the cusp of irrelevancy. However, that is exactly the claim that is being made. For three teams, the 2026 season will either lead to a bright future outlook for the organization or a fall into obscurity. So without any further ado, here are the three teams that are faced with a “Make-or-Break” season in 2026.

DETROIT TIGERS

It’s easy to understand why our first team makes the cut. Tarik Skubal will be a free agent at the end of the 2026 season. When you are likely to lose the best pitcher in baseball, it’s hard to rebound and recover from that. Yes, Detroit has made strides. And yes, they’ve tried to be a bit aggressive in putting a better team on the field behind Skubal. However, Tarik is a Scott Boras client, and we don’t need to reiterate how much that means when it comes to contract talks. The simplest meaning of being a “Boras guy” is that ninety-nine times out of one hundred, that player is not signing an extension with a team before hitting the free agent market. That’s not to say that the player won’t return to his initial team, but it is to say that he’s going to hear the offers that are out there before deciding. For the Tigers, if they have any hope of wooing Tarik to stay in Detroit, it’s going to take a tremendous season from the team and a monster offer from the checkbook.

HOUSTON ASTROS

In 2025, the “magical” run of the Astros came to a screeching halt when their eight-year streak of postseason appearances ended. And while much of the cast that ended 2025 is returning, along with some new additions, Houston is going to want to prove that 2025 was a fluke. The Astros are going to want to show the world that they are still the team to beat in the American League West division. However, that will be easier said than done, with the ascension of the Seattle Mariners. For Houston, the upcoming 2026 season will be a telling one for the franchise, as if they miss out on the postseason again, decisions are going to have to be made about the future direction of the franchise. Owner Jim Crane has been seeming unwilling to go over a certain threshold for players, including his own “homegrown” stars. And it’s in letting his franchise faces walk away that the future of this franchise can look a little bleak. If Houston doesn’t turn it around from last season and make another postseason run, then the Astros may begin to look a little more like the 2013 team than the 2017 or 2022 teams.

SAN DIEGO PADRES

When it comes to the San Diego Padres, they are in arguably the most confusing/intriguing spot of any team in baseball. The simple fact is that the direction of the franchise is entirely up in the air. After the passing of former owner Peter Seidler, there was a power vacuum that consumed the Padres’ organization. That void from a lead man who wanted nothing more than to win. The upcoming season is going to be a big season in determining where the franchise goes from here as they look to sell the team.
