In the most unsurprising news of Yankees Spring Training, Jasson Dominguez was sent down to start the 2026 season in Triple-A. And while not a surprising decision, it is still one that should be questioned. The decision makers were also going to send Domínguez down after Trent Grisham took the Qualifying Offer and Cody Bellinger returned via free agency. So let’s take a look at why this decision is just the next one in a plethora of curious decisions that the Yankees’ front office has made over the past few seasons.
POOR DECISION BASED ON SPRING RESULTS
Yes, it is absolutely a mistake to look at results in Spring Training with certainty that they will lead to success in the regular season. There have been many players who have had great Springs and then terrible results in the season. Look no further than JDom’s Yankee teammate Anthony Volpe. In the Spring of 2023, Volpe had a strong Spring and won the Yankees’ starting shortstop job over Oswald Peraza, and the regular season results have not been positive in any of the three seasons since his debut.
That being said, Jasson Dominguez has gotten off to a tremendous start in Spring Training. The idea of sending down a player that has been performing so well this Spring seems like the Yankees are not trying to bring the best 26-man roster North to begin the season. And even if we look back to the final moment of Dominguez’s 2025 season, it was a blistering double in the postseason after not playing for about two weeks. Deciding to send Jasson down seems like a poor decision based on the 2026 Spring Training results.

SADLY, BETTER OFF ELSEWHERE
The sad fact about the “demotion” of Jasson Dominguez to Triple-A feels like a banishment for a job well done. For Dominguez being traded away from the New York Yankees feels like the only way for Jasson to be able to truly blossom into the player that fans believed him capable of being since his early days in the Yankees’ farm system. When you’re nicknamed “The Martian” and you hit a home run in your first Major League at-bat against a future Hall of Famer in Justin Verlander, there’s little question that the upside feels astronomical. Yet, after his injury, Yankees management seems to have soured on the former top prospect. If Jasson is going to have any hope of being an everyday superstar, it will likely need to come with playing for a different organization.
