For years, the Pittsburgh Pirates have lived in the gray area between rebuilding and relevance. With the arrival and long-term commitment to Konnor Griffin, paired with the dominance of Paul Skenes, Pittsburgh is beginning to look less like a project and more like a contender in the making.

At just 19 years old, Konnor Griffin made his MLB debut with the Pirates on April 3, 2026, starting at shortstop and delivering a clutch RBI double in his first at-bat against the Baltimore Orioles.

The Face of the Future

Konnor Griffin isn’t just another name in the Pirates’ system anymore, he’s becoming the face of it. The Pittsburgh Pirates made that clear when they committed to the 19-year-old shortstop with a nine-year, $140 million extension, the biggest deal in franchise history.

It was a move that said as much about direction as it did about talent.

From his selection in the 2024 draft to a rapid climb through the minors, Griffin’s trajectory has been steep. He earned Minor League Player of the Year honors before debuting in 2026, and while his big-league numbers are still taking shape, the tools are impossible to ignore.

Griffin put together a standout 2025 minor league campaign, hitting .333 with 21 home runs, 94 RBIs, and 65 stolen bases while climbing through Single-A, High-A, and Double-A.

The Pirates didn’t wait for proof of stardom, they acted on belief in what’s still to come.

An Ace Already in Place

While Griffin represents the future, Paul Skenes is already the present.

The reigning NL Cy Young winner has quickly become one of baseball’s most dominant arms, stacking elite performances and locking down the top of the rotation. 

Griffin is locked in through 2034, but Skenes is still on a path toward eventual free agency. And historically, Pittsburgh hasn’t been the type of franchise to hand out the kind of massive deal a generational ace will command. 

However, Griffin’s presence changes the equation.

For the first time, Skenes wouldn’t be carrying a franchise alone. Now, the Pirates suddenly look like a team that can contend.

But contention won’t be built on star power alone. The Pirates’ ability to rise in the National League will depend on the supporting pieces around them finally stabilizing into consistent production. Young contributors who can complement Griffin’s emergence and take pressure off Skenes will be just as important as the headliners themselves.
