Gerrit Cole was scheduled to be tonight’s starter, making just his second start since returning from the injured list. The other key factor heading into the game for the New York Yankees was the fact that they were going for not just the series sweep but also sweeping the season series. So let’s dive into the three “Outs” (takeaways) from the Yankees 7-0 shutout win over the Royals.
OUT #1: GERRIT COLE DELIVERS ANOTHER STRONG START FROM A YANKEE STARTER
In just the second start since returning from his injury, Gerrit Cole was masterful again. This time around, Cole pitched 6.2 scoreless innings while striking out ten and walking none. Gerrit would only surrender 4 hits in the contest as well. The Loss of Max Fried feels less devastating in large part due to Gerrit’s return. (Also, the Yankees getting the best-case scenario for Fried doesn’t hurt either.) If Gerrit can continue to pitch like he did in this contest, along with the contributions from the other starters, then the Yankees’ season looks to be in better shape than was felt all offseason long.
OUT #2: OFFENSE DELIVERS AGAIN
It had seemed for at least a week’s stretch of games that the Yankees forgot that you need to score more runs than your opponent to win games. For a time, it also seemed as if the Bronx Bombers had given way to being content with once again living the gimmick and only relying on the long ball to score runs. That being said, the last two nights, while there were home runs hit, the Yankees didn’t just stop there with their scoring. Seven runs on eight hits and having a .286 batting average with runners in scoring position is a good way to defeat your opponent.
OUT #3: SEASON SERIES SWEEP
Across six games in the 2026 season, the New York Yankees have won every single game against the Kansas City Royals. It’s never an easy thing to sweep any series, let alone to sweep a season series. The Yankees have had a not-so-quiet dominance over the American League Central for quite some time now, and that includes the Royals. This season series was just more proof and evidence of that. New York has now won 15 consecutive games (including the postseason) over the Royals. Such a series winner can be a good launching pad for a team like New York with postseason aspirations.
