Well, it’s time for the third installment of our weekly countdown series known simply as “3 Up & 3 Down.” So if you’re new to the Baseball Banter Broadcast, 3 Up & 3 Down is our weekly examination of three teams playing well, three teams that aren’t. And we add in a team to “Be On the Look Out” for (or BOLO) just for good measure. So let’s examine “week two” of 3 Up & 3 Down.

FIRST UP: MIAMI MARLINS (40-38)

The Miami Marlins have become a welcomed surprise of the 2026 season in Major League Baseball. The fact that a team that was thought to be at least a few seasons away from trying to compete has been so competitive this season is a positive sign for baseball. Miami has also found itself being MLB’s best team over the most recent team game stretch. The Marlins have gone 7-3 over that time and are in the midst of a four-game winning streak. An even more impressive stat for Miami right now is the fact that they have erased their run differential deficit and are back at 0 (336-336; Runs Scored-Runs Allowed). There is still a long way to before the season ends, however, the Marlins front office must be excited about the potential future for the organization.

FIRST DOWN: ATLANTA BRAVES (48-28)

It’s hard to find a team that has played overall better than the Atlanta Braves have in 2026. However, over the last ten games, the Braves have run up against a bit of a wall. Over their last ten games, the Braves have gone just 3-7 and have dropped to the fourth best run differential mark in MLB. Now obviously the drop to fourth best is still a high ranking mark, especially compared to the rest of their own division. That being said, the recent struggles especially in their recent homestand don’t lend to encouraging thoughts for their upcoming road trip. Atlanta has the kind of talent on the roster that should be able to shake out of this current funk and rise back up to being the top two team in baseball that they have been for much of the 2026 season.

SECOND UP: MINNESOTA TWINS (38-41)

The Minnesota Twins are about to be one of the most discussed teams over these next few weeks as the trade deadline approaches on August 3rd. Minnesota’s full scale breakdown and liquidation sale during last season’s trade deadline seemed to lend to the idea that this season would lead to more of the same this season. However, a recent hot streak could make the Twins front office reconsider their position relative to the buyer/seller market place that’s about to heat up in the next few weeks. Over their last ten games, Minnesota has gone 7-3 and brought their run differential down to just -18 and is continuing to trend towards the positive for the Twins. If Minnesota can continue playing this well over the next few weeks they may be playing themselves into a postseason berth by season’s end.

SECOND DOWN: SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS (31-46)

The San Francisco Giants have played themselves into an extremely undesirable and precarious position, especially given their recent sweep at the hands of the aforementioned Miami Marlins. San Francisco also finds themselves in the unenviable position of not really having trade-able assets to try and reset the board for themselves at the trade deadline. The three-game sweep by the Marlins leaves the Giants 4-6 over their last ten games and having fallen to having the second worst run differential mark in all of MLB. If not for the absolutely horrendous, yet rebuilding (again) Colorado Rockies, the Giants would have the worst mark in baseball. The Buster Posey lead front office is going to have to answer for a lot of questionable decisions they’ve made leading to this point of their 2026 campaign. And how the front office decides to handle the trade deadline will go a long way into determining the future of the organization.

THIRD UP: LOS ANGELES DODGERS (49-29)

While for most teams losing two games a row might now feel like a cause for ringing the alarm bells, the Dodgers are the team that absolutely just laughs at this “losing streak”. The Dodgers have built one of the most impressive levels of depth that the sport has ever seen. Los Angeles is built to survive the grind of 162 but their strength is on full display in October. Even after losing two straight games, the Dodgers are still dealing with a positive record over their last ten games at 6-4. And even more impressive is LA’s MLB best run differential mark of +133. A mark that is 14 runs in run differential better than the second best team at that particular stat category.

THIRD DOWN: CHICAGO WHITE SOX (39-37)

The Chicago White Sox have really surprised baseball with how well they’ve been playing during the 2026 campaign. However, over their recent ten game stretch the ChiSox are finding it a bit more difficult to get on the winning side of the baseball. At a mark of 4-6 the White Sox aren’t play the level of baseball that they have for much of 2026. That being said, the sweep at the hands of the Detroit Tigers this past weekend propelled their inclusion on this list. If Chicago can clean things up for next week, then they could avoid the downed portion of this rankings countdown.

BE ON LOOKOUT FOR (BOLO): DETROIT TIGERS (33-44)

The Detroit Tigers are in a very precarious position right now because they are going to have to make a decision over arguably the best pitcher in baseball right now in Tarik Skubal. Thus far during the 2026 the Tigers haven’t played at the level they expected to after a postseason berth in 2025. Yet, things have not shaken out as fans and the Tigers themselves would have enjoyed. And even looking at this recent stretch of baseball the Tigers have yet to really separate themselves from the pack after going 5-5 during that stretch. What makes that number feel even more questionable is the fact that it took the Tigers sweeping the White Sox to reach that 5-5 record. However, wins are wins and they aren’t something that are going to go away. And the sweep of Chicago along with a rather mediocre ten days from many teams, and the upcoming trade deadline have pushed the Tigers into being a team to follow over this upcoming stretch of baseball. Detroit like the aforementioned Twins will become very interesting to watch over the next few weeks of the season.
