In the world of Major League Baseball, there is a term to describe an absolutely gifted talent. That term is a five-tool player. To be a five-tool player, you must possess all five of the different skills or abilities that make up a baseball player. The skills or tools are the ability to hit for average, as well as for power, the possession of speed, and a lockdown defender who also possesses a plus rocket of an arm. Those five tools all in one player make for a legendary and valuable weapon and talent in the game. There are some players who own many of the tools necessary. However, many more players do not. Thus, for this article, we will create a five-tool mega player using different members of the Chicago Cubs roster.
CONTACT TOOL: SEIYA SUZUKI

Watching what Seiya Suzuki has been doing at the plate in 2026 has been a fun sight for Cubs fans. At the time of this writing, Suzuki has the kind of slashline managers dream about for all their hitters: .300/.400/.500 line. For the Cubbies, having Suzuki hitting this consistently is a huge benefit to the team, especially with some of their other profile hitters not matching the back of their baseball cards yet. If Seiya can keep this up all season, the Northsiders will be in a very favorable position in the division by season’s end.
POWER TOOL: MOISES BALLESTROS

Get to know the name Moises Ballestros. The young Cubbies’ backstop and power threat is going to become a household name. Watching the damage Moises can do when he connects is something that feels otherworldly. Currently, Moises is delivering more than just power output for Chicago. However, don’t sleep on the absolute bomb factory that Moises can produce from home plate.
ARM TOOL: PETE CROW-ARMSTRONG

Pete Crow-Armstrong could represent the Cubs in quite a few of the five tools rather easily. However, as the stipulations are one player per tool, why not use the player whose last name tells you all about his ability with this tool? Crow-ARMSTRONG currently ranks the best amongst the Northsiders in terms of StatCast’s arm strength tool. And when you watch PCA play defense and throw would be runners out, then you understand why he’s made the list at this particular tool. PCA’s throws average the most velocity of any of their position players, and it makes it an easy call to name him the arm tool for the 2026 Chicago Cubs five-tool mega player.
DEFENSE TOOL: NICO HOERNER

Nico Hoerner is a standout player who’s really coming into his own in 2026. One place that Nico has always been strong is defensively. Naming Nico the defense tool for the Cubs is easy, especially given that the only player to have more Outs Above Average on the team has already been used in PCA. Hoerner is a fantastic player and provides the Cubbies with some of the best and smoothest defensive plays on a nightly basis. If the game is on the line, you want the ball hit to Nico Hoerner.
SPEED TOOL: MATT SHAW

When it comes to speed in the Cubs’ lineup, other than PCA and Nico, you want Matt Shaw up. Using StatCast’s Sptint Speed as a baseline tool, the aforementioned PCA and Hoerner are the only two runners better than Matt Shaw. Shaw has proven to provide the Cubs with some versatility this season. And running around the outfield has allowed his natural speed to show itself in a much greater light. But beyond just what he can do tracking balls defensively, Shaw is also providing the Northsiders with quality on the basepaths. And for that reason, Matt Shaw gets named the speed tool for the 2026 Chicago Cubs mega five-tool player.
