POWER TOOL: WILLSON CONTRERAS

When it comes to power in the 2026 Boston Red Sox lineup, there is no one more qualified than Willson Contreras. Contreras was brought in to be the answer to the loss of Alex Bregman and Rafael Devers. Willson will definitely bring a power swing to the Boston lineup.

SPEED TOOL: JARREN DURAN

One of the fastest and most aggressive runners in baseball is none other than Jarren Duran. So naming him the speed tool on the 2026 Boston Red Sox mega five-tool player is quite an easy and obvious choice. Duran plays the game of baseball with his hair on fire. Watching his intensity on the field can be an inspiring sight to behold. When you think about the speed tool in baseball, you can picture someone like Duran who pursues extra bases like oxygen. Whether it’s stealing a base or going first to third on a single, Jarren pushes the envelope on the bases and in the outfield like very few players in MLB today. So again, it’s an easy decision to make when naming the BoSox five-tool speed tool.

DEFENSE TOOL: CEDDANE RAFAELA

If you think about Duran for the speed factor, then Ceddane Rafela is the Red Sox’s poster boy for defense. Rafaela has quietly become one of baseball’s top defenders, regardless of position. Ceddane’s defensive prowess is often taken for granted when teams test him during their play against Boston. For Boston, Rafaela’s defensive skillset gives him a chance to be a difference maker in every game. Thus, naming him the defense tool is a simple choice.

ARM TOOL: WILYER ABREU

Arm strength is the easy litmus test to determine the arm tool, and if you examine the 2026 Boston Red Sox, Wilyer Abreu is the arm strength master. Abreu paces the field amongst his teammates in the categories of arm strength and average velocity in his throws. Base runners run at their own peril when Wilyer is in the outfield.

CONTACT TOOL: ROMAN ANTHONY

It may seem odd to place a place whose slashline is .208/.339/.292, however, when you examine the underlying numbers of Anthony’s performance, it’s better than it seems. Obviously, you’d like the results to match the production numbers, but there are reasons to be hopeful that the highly touted prospect can reach serviceable if not admirable numbers by season’s end. Below is a chart of the top three hitters by xwOBA, or expected weighted On Base Average. Based on this chart, Anthony’s numbers should level out by season’s end, which is why he was the selected contact tool for the Red Sox.

Quote of the week

You can’t sit on a lead and run a few plays into the line and just kill the clock. You’ve got to throw the ball over the damn plate and five the other man his chance. That’s why baseball is the greatest game of them all.
