The Yankees looked dead in the water after two innings Sunday afternoon.

Trailing 3-0 and searching for answers against the Athletics at Sutter Health Park, the Bronx Bombers instead produced one of the most explosive offensive innings in franchise history, sending 18 batters to the plate and scoring 13 runs in a stunning third inning that powered a 13-8 victory.

The inning began innocently enough with Anthony Volpe reaching base. From there, the Yankees simply refused to make an out.

One hitter after another reached safely as the lineup turned over. Walks, singles, stolen bases, and timely hits overwhelmed Athletics pitching. By the time Oakland finally recorded the first out, the Yankees had already crossed the plate 10 times.

Ben Rice delivered one of the biggest blows of the inning, driving in four runs during the offensive avalanche. Trent Grisham chipped in with a two-run single, while the Yankees repeatedly put pressure on the defense with aggressive baserunning.

The third inning lasted 43 minutes and completely flipped the game on its head. What had been a comfortable 3-0 Athletics lead quickly became a 13-3 Yankees advantage.

Remarkably, the Yankees did not hit a home run during the inning. Instead, they pieced together 11 hits, four walks, and several stolen bases while taking advantage of nearly every scoring opportunity.

The offensive explosion was enough support for starter Will Warren, who settled in after a rough first inning and completed six strong frames. While Oakland mounted a late comeback attempt, the Yankees’ historic third inning proved too much to overcome.

The outburst was historic for several reasons. According to reports following the game, the Yankees’ first 12 batters of the inning reached safely. The club scored 13 runs in a single inning for the first time in years and finished just one run shy of the franchise record of 14 runs in an inning, set in 1920.

Perhaps most impressive was the way the inning showcased the Yankees’ lineup depth. Nearly every hitter contributed, turning what looked like an uphill battle into one of the most memorable innings of the 2026 season.

For a team with postseason aspirations, Sunday’s third inning served as a reminder of just how dangerous the Yankees can be when the lineup gets rolling.
