The 2026 Wild Card Series (outside of Atlanta and Philadelphia) were showcases of pure dominance. As the Chicago White Sox, New York Yankees, and San Diego Padres all swept their respective best-of-three series. (The Atlanta Braves and Philadelphia Phillies would play all three potential games in their series.) Those outstanding showings are now a thing of the past as the next round, known as the “Division Series,” begins today. Four games on this Saturday, October 3rd, 2026. The series pits the Chicago White Sox against their division rival, the Cleveland Guardians, and the New York Yankees against their division adversary, the Tampa Bay Rays, for the American League side of the bracket. And in the National League, the defending World Champion Los Angeles Dodgers will play host to the aforementioned Braves, and the Padres will head to Milwaukee to face off against the Brewers. So let’s preview these series, shall we?

CHICAGO WHITE SOX VS. CLEVELAND GUARDIANS

For the Chicago White Sox, the 2026 season feels like playing with house money. After three consecutive 100-loss seasons, the White Sox made the postseason, which was history-making in and of itself. Yet, it goes beyond that for this young, scrappy ballclub. They barely missed out on winning the American League Central crown by one single game to the aforementioned Guardians. Cleveland has been the chief and captain of this division for many years, but the way that Chicago played this season, that was not as heir-apparent as once believed. This becomes a very interesting series because, as division rivals, both teams know each other very well. The teams have already met 13 times in 2026 and will add at least 3 more games to that tally. The White Sox showed that they aren’t in the postseason by accident or just because of a down season in the American League. This young Chicago team seems poised to be a problem in the AL for years to come. Cleveland, however, will do all it can to silence the young upstarts.

ATLANTA BRAVES VS. LOS ANGELES DODGERS

The reigning, defending World Series champion Dodgers take their first step (technically the second step, as they had to make it to the postseason) in defending their World Series championship and their endeavor to “three-peat”. They take on an Atlanta Braves team that comes in hot off of vanquishing division foe the Philadelphia Phillies. Atlanta is an intriguing club to watch because they have all the necessary ingredients to dethrone the Dodgers. It will come down to two questions for the Braves. One, how good can their bullpen continue to be during this postseason after their 2026 campaign? And secondly, can their offense continue to show up as it did in game three of the NL Wild Card series? If the answer to these questions for Atlanta is yes, then they will have a great showing against LA.

However, the Dodgers, by way of being the second seed in the postseason bracket, earned something critically valuable to them that they have not had in 2026, especially lately, and that’s time. Time to allow their superstars to heal, most notably Shohei Ohtani. A healthy Ohtani is a dangerous Ohtani. Having the time off to heal up before the division series begins could become the most valuable aspect of the Dodgers’ quest for their third consecutive World Series title.

NEW YORK YANKEES VS. TAMPA BAY RAYS

The American League Division Series are essentially just a further extension of the regular season, as the Yankees take on the Rays. Much like with the aforementioned White Sox and Guardians matchup, the Yankees and Rays have battled 13 times before this season, with the Rays having a slight 7-6 games advantage from the regular season series. For the Yankees, they are without their best hitter and captain, Aaron Judge. However, for much of the 2026 season, they’ve been without him. Tampa’s best hitter, Junior Caminero, had one of the best offensive seasons during the 2026 regular season campaign. And if Tampa is going to be successful, Junior will need to keep the hot hitting going. Which may be difficult against the Yankees, who kept Junior to his lowest OPS during the season against any team at .582.

SAN DIEGO PADRES VS. MILWAUKEE BREWERS

The final matchup of the night will see arguably the hottest team in baseball right now, the Padres, face off against arguably the best team in baseball in 2026, the Brewers. Both teams are matched up very well, and this series could arguably go down as the most must-see series in the 2026 postseason. Milwaukee will feature Jacob Misiorowski, the no-doubt 2026 NL Cy Young Award winner, as the ace and game one starter. And on the other side, veteran Robbie Ray will start for San Diego, but for the Friars it’s all about setting things up to get to their incredible bullpen, anchored by “The Reaper” Mason Miller. Again, this series could arguably be the best one to watch of the 2026 postseason.
